Here’s a brief overview of each topic page to help you choose what Artful Efforts topics you might like to explore:

Art in Practice

The Art in Practice topic section is all about artists at work.

Blog posts filed under “Art in Practice” includes interviews with artists about specific processes they follow in their work, roundup posts compiling multiple artists discussing a particular piece of their process, and personal posts by me about my own process.

Here are some examples:

In Exploring LACDC’s New Home with the Creators of Terra, I interview all the collaborators involved with creating Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company’s Terra, a multi-media, immersive performance work in their now-home Stomping Ground LA.

I interviewed writer and choreographer Andrew Pearson for Is Your Story Worth Telling about how he went about creating his one-person-show, Abbale (premiering soon), a personal story that resonated deeply with me at a feedback session I was invited to.

In Don’t Wait for Inspiration to Strike, Do This Instead, I discuss the methods I have used to stay inspired and make sure I’m never waiting on inspiration to get to work.

Art and Culture

This section pertains to how art affects culture and vice versa. It’s an open topic about an array of subjects, movements, and more.

My first Art and Culture, What to do about Violence Toward Women in Horror, post was a recap of a panel I moderated for Crypticon about violence toward women in horror. There are lots of awesome stats in here and some great recommendations of phenomenal women in horror at the end of the post! (Check it out)

The most recent post in Art and Culture is a roundup post of 10 artists sharing their experience of creating art under stay-at-home orders. These artists include writers, dancers, filmmakers, visual artists, and more. They also discuss their thoughts around the future of their industries post-Covid-19. It’s called Making Space for Art At-Home: How 10 Artists are Adjusting to Live Under Covid-19.

I have also begun paying $50 for guest posts allowing artists to weigh in on other artists, how art relates to cultural phenomena, how art has affected cultural or societal change, and cultural analysis of artistic genres or specific works. You can submit your guest post idea here.

The Business of Art

The Business of Art section covers all things business related to art. This includes making money from your work, how to market and brand yourself as an artist, and I hope to cover topics like how to copyright your work, etc. in the future.

Marketing for Artists – How to Effectively Market Your Work is an interview with arts marketing expert Napoleon Gladney and among my most popular posts. In it, he gave an amazing, comprehensive roadmap for marketing your work without taking too much time away from creating.

In Make Money at Your Next Virtual Show with These 4 Tips, I recap the 4 things I think have helped my virtual burlesque production make upwards of $1,500 per show throughout the pandemic.

Inspiration and Mindset

Inspiration and Mindset is all about letting go of limiting beliefs and finding inspiration to continually make work and put ourselves out there as artists.

This section contains my most popular post, How to Get Over Yourself and Get Started. This is a roundup post featuring 21 artists who discuss how to overcome imposter syndrome, lack of motivation, lack of confidence, and more to keep creating and realizing our potential as artists.

One of my personal favorite posts is an interview I did with dancer, writer, filmmaker, and producer Katie Malia called Finding Success as a Multi-Passionate Artist. In this interview, she talks about how she overcame pressures to choose just one artistic passion to following her heart’s desires to find success as a dancer, choreographer, comedian, and even now creating a comedy series with Margaret Cho on board as an executive producer.

Reviews

This is exactly what it sounds like!

Artful Efforts started as a dance review blog. I reviewed over a dozen live dance performances before I expanded the blog to more align with my passion and interest in the artistic process.

Recently, I reviewed twin novellas Virgins in Reverse/The Intrusion.
